Natural waxes VS Synthetics

Natural Wax VS Synthetics

There are two forms of protection for your paint: Carnauba waxes and Synthetic waxes which are actually polymer paint sealants.

Carnauba waxes are the traditional, natural, time-tested form of protection for cars. Paint sealants are newer and are chemically formulated to produce similar effects as natural waxes. Although they are both widely used and quite similar, there are a few differences between the two.

Carnauba wax

Products using natural wax will be talking about Carnauba wax. You will find that using a Carnauba wax will give your finish more of a warmth and a glow. It provides a deep rich lustre and wet look on the car's paint which is hard to imitate with synthetic waxes.

Natural waxes are also better for water resistance. They will cause the drops of water to bead and run off the car. This takes the anxiety out of driving in the rain!

But what exactly is Carnauba wax?

Carnauba wax (also kown as brazil wax or palm wax) is derived from the Copernicia prunifera plant. This plant is found in the north-eastern section of the Brazilian states of Piauí, Ceará, and Rio Grande do Norte (Wikipedia, 2014). Pure carnauba wax is extremely hard and therefore needs additional ingredients such as oils or solvents to arrive into a liquid form.

From an environmental point of view, Carnauba Wax would be the most appropriate choice since it is a renewable resource.

In terms of durability, Carnauba waxes usually can last anywhere between 4 -12 weeks, depending on the quality of the products and climate conditions.

Synthetics

Synthetics products are a chemically formulated paint sealants that do not contain wax. They, for the most part contain polymers or acrylic. These are the two main types of sealers.

Synthetic paint sealers tend to last much longer than natural waxes and come quite close tolooking as good as a carnauba wax. A cold glass like layer will seem to sit on top of the paint. Although providing less depth than carnauba natural waxes (and subsequently less conditioning of the paint) synthetic polymers provide a more reflective coat creating that glossy ‘mirror finish’.

Polymer waxes are not as desirable from an environmental standpoint due to the fact that they derive from petroleum-based resources. However, some find them easier to work with in terms of application and buffing.

They are usually more durable and will last between 4 to 6 months, depending on the quality of the product and climate conditions.

Differences between Polymer and Carnauba wax

Scientifically

The way the molecules work on the paint surface is different.

Polymer sealant molecules attach themselves to each other and create a mesh like effect over your paint. This creates a reflective layer which gives it that superficial bright shine.

Carnauba wax molecules attach themselves to the individual paint molecules. This gives the shine some depth and allows the wax to condition the paint.

Melting points/durability

Polymer melts at 350F Carnauba Wax 180F.
Polymer lasts 4-6 months Carnauba wax lasts 4-12 weeks

This means that synthetics will have a higher tolerance to heat, especially in the hot Australian sun. Great for those who needs a durable protection. However, if you’re using quality products like CalCustom Products on your car, it might be safe to say you won’t be leaving your car/bike out in 40 degrees direct sunlight for extended period of time anyway.

Price

Carnauba waxes are on average more expensive because of how the ingredients are sourced. And as always, chemically man-made ingredients will ways be cheaper.

In retail stores you will find natural wax products only around $5 - $10 dearer than synthetics. It comes down to what you are willing to spend and what sort of look you want.
